    About Dr. Richard A. Anderson

    Dr. Richard A. Anderson was a lead scientist at the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Beltsville, MD for more than 38 years and received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Iowa State University also completing postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. He has been working on the role of chromium and other trace elements in human health for more than 38 years. For the past more than 20 years he has been working on the role of natural products, with special emphasis on cinnamon, on risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

    This research involved 60 people with type 2 diabetes, consisting of 30 men and 30 women which had age above 50 years old. They were divided into 6 randomly selected groups. The first group consumed 1 gram of cinnamon per day, the second group consumed 3 grams of cinnamon per day, and the third group consumed 6 grams of cinnamon per day.

    As for the number 4,5,6 group are consuming placebo capsules in the same amount as cinnamon that being consumed by group 1,2 and 3. After 40 days, the groups that consumed cinnamon getting their blood sugar levels dropped by 18-29%, triglycerides by 23-30% and LDL cholesterol by 7-27%. However, there is no significant changes were found for HDL cholesterol.

    This means consuming cinnamon 1, 3, 6 grams per day for people with diabetes can reduce blood sugar levels and the risk of diabetes complications that is highly related with high blood pressure and heart disease.

    Whereas placebo capsules do not have any effect on reducing blood sugar levels and total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol.

    Also recently there is some research that supporting the research statement from Dr. Richard A.     Only use raw cinnamon

    It’s being recommended to use raw cinnamon in powder or stick shape, do not consume cinnamon that has been processed such as cinnamon oil. The Methyl Hydroxy Chalcone Polymer (MHCP) compounds that is being found in raw cinnamon is already gone because of the process in making cinnamon oil. MHCP is the main ingredient of cinnamon which has an insulin like effect and can increase insulin sensitivity.

    Although it is still being debated about the effect of cinnamon for diabetes treatment, it doesn’t hurt you to add ¼-1 teaspoon of cinnamon in your diabetes diet program. There are no side effects of cinnamon unless you have allergic to cinnamon.
